Description
The IGCP 521 2007 conference was held in Gelendgik and Kerch as the third conference in a series of conferences for IGCP 521. It was also the fifth and final conference in a series of IGCP 481 Plenary Meetings and Field Trips. We ran this event in the northern part of the Black Sea. This area was a key region for the success of both IGCP 521 and IGCP 481.
The research area contains a rich sedimentary record of climate, sea-level change, neotectonics, and coastline migration. Additionally, it holds some of the most significant evidence of human prehistory and history in the region. Above all, the developments in this area are closely associated with the “cradle of civilization” in the Near East. Altogether, it is a place of great interest to the earth, marine, environmental, and social sciences.
The place also contains long-abandoned archaeological sites and historic landscapes. These locales give us important insights into how human activities and the environment have been linked together through time. They also show us how cultural practices contribute to substantial environmental change, leading to subsequent changes in our economy.
The length of the IGCP 521 2007 conference was four days. The field program also included five field trips.
