Sodium hypochlorite (bleach, liquid chlorine) is a chemical compound with the formula NaClO.

The disinfection compound in sodium hypochlorite is hypochlorous acid. Hypochlorous acid reacts with ammonia to form chloramines, which are a weak secondary disinfectant.

There are many different types of chloramines. In a pH range of 7.5 - 9.0, monochloramines form.

Dosing Rate

The dosing rate of sodium hypochlorite is based on the concentration of chlorine (hypochlorous acid).
Recommended injection rate of free chlorine is between 1 and 5 mg/l.

- The disinfection compound in sodium hypochlorite is hypochlorous acid.
- Hypochlorous acid cannot be isolated from sodium hypochlorite solution because it exists in equilibrium with its precursors. This equilibrium depends on the water's pH.
- The most efficient pH range for hypochlorite disinfection is 6.8 - 7.5.
